Radiometric dating can be compared to an hourglass. When the timepiece is turned over, sand grains fall from the top of the hourglass to the bottom. This is consistent with the assumption that each decay event is independent and its chance does not vary over time.where is the half-life of the element, is the time expired since the sample contained the initial number atoms of the nuclide, and is the remaining amount of the nuclide. A sign tells her that the Tyrannosaurus Rex is millions of years old. Debunking mysterious and complicated explanations of radiometric dating can be accomplished with a simple understanding of its general principles. Wiens Bewildered, Janet watches her son gaze in awe at the dinosaur exhibit. Yet, many people challenge the accuracy of radiometric dating, and misinformation describing the various radiometric techniques abounds. For me it doesn’t cause doubts because there are other reasonable arguments for god’s existence, like the evidence of objective moral truth or the evidence for intelligent design. This did however cause me to think about the evidential strength of dating objects to disprove creation and the age of the earth.
The choice of these initial conditions affects the results.(For a brief science review, see sidebar and figure 1.) The timepiece that allows dating is the “radioactive” decay of certain kinds of atoms from one form into another.Radioactive decay results from unstable combinations of protons and neutrons in the atom’s nucleus. Some isotopes have half lives longer than the present age of the universe, but they are still subject to the same laws of quantum physics and will eventually decay, even if doing so at a time when all remaining atoms in the universe are separated by astronomical distances.Various elements are used for dating different time periods; ones with relatively short half-lives like carbon-14 (or C) are useful for dating once-living objects (since they include atmospheric carbon from when they were alive) from about ten to fifty thousand years old. Longer-lived isotopes provide dating information for much older times. These assumptions are not demonstrated, only supposed to be true.
