The trio released two studio albums, Dry (1992) and Rid of Me (1993) before disbanding, after which Harvey continued as a solo artist.Since 1995, she has released a further nine studio albums with collaborations from various musicians including John Parish, former bandmate Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey, and Eric Drew Feldman and has also worked extensively with record producer Flood.
Her distinctive gothic-folk sound and lyrical ferocity loom large in the work of scores of contemporary musicians – Juliette Lewis, Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Khan, Perfume Genius, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein, Sky Ferreira and Patrick Wolf have all expressed admiration. It is also difficult for her to receive warmth, affection or appreciation, for she often feels that she does not really deserve it or that "they do not really mean it". Harvey may have traveled extensively in her early years, or something in her background may have enabled her to understand and identify with many different types of people or cultures. Harvey wants to completely immerse herself in the feelings and tastes of a new place, rather than simply acquire facts or an intellectual appreciation. Harvey has a very soft heart and others can always appeal to PJ's sympathetic, affectionate side. Harvey seems quite peaceful and the next, she is exploding with great force and unexpected fury.Harvey may therefore come across as rather cool and aloof - much more so than she feels. Harvey needs to learn to be gentler and less of a perfectionist with others and with herself. Harvey has a craving for things that are far away and foreign, or that she has never experienced before. Emotionally as well PJ is restless and somewhat of a wanderer. She especially cares about the needs of children, mothers and families, and she wants a love partner who values marriage, home and family as much as she does. The intensity of her reactions often surprises even her.But listening to the five albums she has produced you sense trouble.Loud, edgy, buzzing with feedback, they are full of intimations of anguish, craving and disturbance - the voice of confused, dysfunctional femininity.A small, dark, pent-up bundle of anguish and fury throwing herself at the world, it has sometimes seemed as if an essential part of her fascination was watching to see if she would break.
